“It takes a village to raise a child”
Cultures all over the world nurture the new mother when a baby is born. Her village surrounds her with love and practical support, so that she can focus on resting and recovering after birth, learning to breastfeed, and bonding with her new baby.
This type of nurturance is close to non-existent in our Western culture, with the focus instead being on ‘bouncing back’ after childbirth, losing the baby weight, increasing a baby’s independence, and returning to paid work.
The shift away from the bigger, interconnected extended family and emergence of the nuclear family structure in post-industrialist society, as well as the movement of many people away from family for study and work opportunities, has meant that new parents are increasingly isolated and under-supported when they have a baby. We know we’re not meant to parent alone. Parenting should be done with support around us, however, the reality for many new families is that the parenting is done by mainly one parent while the other is at work. We just don’t have the support structures in place to nurture a new family, unless they are surrounded by extended family and a supportive community, or they pay for this support.
I passionately believe that we should be parenting in community. We may not have our ‘traditional’ village around us of siblings, cousins, parents, aunties and other village members, however my hope is to begin creating something similar through establishing connections amongst a group of local parents I’ve brought together called The Village.
